The Rejected is a performative 35 mm slide presentation produced on occasion of the Writing Photographs conference at Tate Modern on the 13th of October, 2018. The performance explore the historical representation of homosexuality through the oppositional registers of science and literature.
The work draws from The Rejected, the first documentary broadcasted on a USA television in 1961, where different experts from science and humanities are invited to discuss homosexuality for a mass audience. The slide are then altered from vocalised pieces of queer literature and poetry, that loosely counter-answer the scientific statement recorded in the slide-text. The literary pieces are drawn from James Baldwin, Essex Hemphill, Mark Goldby and the artist’s own writing.
